Going off the grid can have multiple meanings depending on who you talk to. It could have the meaning of living your life independently from the status quo and not having to rely on various sources for our basic needs. It could be anything from being able to supply your own power, to total sustainable living, or being able to provide for yourself in all of our basic needs.

There are a lot of people who dream of being able to say goodbye to the their local power company. Being able to sustain themselves with their own food growth, power and water would be a dream come true. The truth is that most of us have become accustomed to relying on others for our basic needs.

We have developed into a world where we have easy living, and that all we have to do is write a check to be able to acquire the basics for our existence. But what if all of that easy living were suddenly cut off? What if we had to provide our own milk and eggs, and other foods? What about water? Could we supply our own water if we had to? It is possible that the day may come where we will be required to provide for ourselves. The U.S. Government for years has been warning people to get prepared for any adversity. Do you think that if the government is giving this warning, than they may possibly know something?

One part of our lives that we have taken for granted is electricity. Flip a switch and our appliances come on. Only in modern history have we come to expect such a convenience for things such as communications, pumping water for basic needs, keeping our food from spoiling, staying cool with our a/c systems and being able to get on the internet. We could make a list of hundreds if not thousands of uses for electricity.

But what if you were able to find a way of going off the grid, and being able to provide your own essential electricity? How about being able to have power during brown outs or blackouts while others are needing to light candles or use flashlights? What happens if the power is out for long periods of time and those flashlight batteries go dead? The candles burn down to the last of the wick?

For those who are prepared, they will not have to worry about such issues. If you are prepared, and implement the right systems, you can provide power both day and night – during sunny days, or during rain and wind storms.

Two types of alternative energy that people are implementing in their homes right now are solar power and wind power. Solar power is exactly what the name says – it relies on the suns rays to create electricity. It is reliable – as long as the sun is shining. Another type of alternative energy is wind power. Wind power is very economical due to many reasons. Wind energy will work almost anytime the sun is not shining. It will work for you during cloudy days, night time, stormy weather and rainy weather – as long as the wind is blowing. Both systems are great, and the ultimate system would comprise of components from both systems to take advantage of all weather patterns.

As mentioned, when you use a wind turbine, you will have no worries as to whether the sun is shining or not. Generally, even with a slight breeze, you will create electricity using a wind turbine.

When it is storming outside, it is usually blowing some kind of wind – day or night. And the cost of wind energy is very inexpensive for a diy wind generator. Using homemade wind generator plans, a person could build their own wind turbine for under $200! That adds up to quite a bit of savings when you consider that once a system is installed, the monthly cost is virtually nothing. Using wind generator plans, you will be taken step by step in building and implementing your wind turbine system. You will have access to videos, guides and everything you need to get your system running and ready to go!
